Can I help with homework?
For Language Arts: Have your son/daughter stay in the struggle. It's easy to sometimes give an answer or help your son/daughter with their Reading Responses or other assignments. But, in the end, your child will grow exponentially if you take on the role of "guide by the side" and talking to your son/daughter about time management and effort. Students learn from peer and teacher feedback. Home and class discussions shape their understanding and allow them to make deep connections, which ultimately, helps with their written expression. Allowing students to find their own voice, make their own mistakes, and find their own way is what leads to greater success in the long run.
"If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning." - Carol Dweck
For Math homework, allow your child to struggle. Research suggests that mathematics should be learned by problem solving instead of how most of us learned math - by memorizing steps. Instead of solving the problem for them, promote problem
solving by asking questions such as:
What do you know already?
What do you need to find out?
What strategies would you use?
Explain what you know about the problem so far.
Can you make a model to show that?
Does that answer make sense?
